Female founders

Michele & Kylie are two kiwi women who have periods.

They also have four daughters (and one son!) between them.

Over a glass of wine they got talking about what the future looks like for their daughters, and wondered: Why is technology in every other area of our lives evolving so quickly, but our options for managing our periods are limited to bulky pads or tampons, or a cup that was first designed in the 1930s? Why are we still clogging up landfill globally with 45 billion non-biodegradable single-use menstrual products every year?

Surely we can do better. Let's revolutionise the way wahine menstruate forever.

AWWA was born.

One $27,000 Kickstarter goal smashed, one very successful period underwear test run, and many glasses of wine later, here we are. AWWA is designed in New Zealand and ethically manufactured. What’s not to love?

Not content to sit around in their underwear all day, these two wahine toa (who also founded the successful Kai Carrier and Frankie Apothecary businesses) have also decided to donate 5% of all AWWA underwear produced towards ending period poverty in New Zealand. Your support will help us donate beautiful, reusable, period-proof AWWA underwear to wahine in need in Aotearoa New Zealand.

AWWA embodies everything that we stand for and believe in for future generations of people who period. To us it means fluidity. AWWA is derived from the Māori word 'awa' meaning river or flow. Māori referred to their period as te awa atua - the divine river, and we want every person to feel divine and empowered during their period. AWWA is not just meant for those who already menstruate, but gives amazing confidence to soon-to-be menstruating teens, and provides support and comfort during pregnancy, post-partum and for minor bladder leakage.

Awwa is for All Periods.

To provide people of all shapes, sizes and cultures with innovative, sustainable products to effectively manage their periods.

To be part of the movement to help eliminate period poverty in New Zealand.

Equality: All people should have the opportunity to manage their periods with dignity and confidence. That’s why we want to help end period poverty

Empowerment: Choice is power when it comes to managing your period. With period underwear, we're providing an alternative, so you can take the power back off the big companies and save money in the long term.

Ease: Periods happen. We're making life a little easier with comfortable, sleek period underwear that you don’t have to re-purchase each month.  You can also put your mind at ease if you're worried about toxic shock syndrome or don’t want to use internal menstrual products for any reason.

Environment: Our period-proof underwear is made with sustainable fabrics and, because it’s reusable, means that fewer single-use menstrual products end up in landfills.

We believe every person that periods deserves better.
